Philanthropy is...
  1. The effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations.
  2. Love of humankind in general.
  3. Something, such as an activity or institution, intended to promote human welfare.

This is one of the most important aspects of Phi Sigma Sigma. Our chapter is always involved in philanthropic endeavors within the community as well as ones outside our state and country. Our sorority's national philanthropy is the National Kidney Foundation. Each year we provide this cause with money donations as well as personal gifts for those on dialysis. It is through these many activities that we hope to better the world in our own way.

Philanthropies we participate in each year:

~Once or twice a month, sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma meet at a local soup kitchen to prepare and serve food to less fortunate members of the community. This proves to be a very rewarding experiece time and time again, as each visit ends with satisfied and thankful participants.

~Aside from giving money to the National Kidney Foundation (our national philanthropy), we also like to do philanthropic and service activites around our school community.

~Every Halloween, we hand out candy to local children who come door-to-door trick-or-treating. This year we had over 100 kids dress up and ready for the holiday!

~During our school's Alcohol Awareness Week each fall, we volunteer to decorate bags with messages and statistics about the dangers of drinking and driving. We set them up around our campus's main square with a candle in each bag. When it gets dark, we light the candles so those who pass by can reflect on their messages and can become aware.

~The Greek community at McDaniel College took in a St. Jude's letter writing campaign to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Each Greek organization had teams and each team member wrote at least 30 letters asking for donations.

Other Philanthropies we have participated in:

~For the past 2 years, sisters have volunteered at the Ryan O'Steen Memorial Golf Tournament.

~This year, we helped McDaniel College freshmen move in to their dorms. We also made door decorations for a local children's hospital at our recruitment rounds.

~We collected articles of clothing and donated them to the less- fortunate residents of Carroll County. These articles of clothing included coats, shirts, pants, gloves, and sweatshirts.

~We sold blue "Breathe" bracelets for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. All of the profits from the bracelets were donated to the foundation.

~We hold several Rock-a-Thons to support the National Kidney Foundation. This is when sisters take shifts rocking in chairs in order to raise "spare change" to donate. In the fall we hold a 12 hour rock-a-thon, in the spring we rock for 24 straight hours. We also made awareness ribbons for the National Kidney Foundation during one of our recruitment events.

~In December, we participated in a toy drive. Each sister donated one small, new toy to children who are less fortunate.

~This holiday season we wrote and decorated holiday cards for soldiers fighting overseas who are not able to celebrate the holidays with their loved ones.
